Special Vehicle Provisions
construction
Constructor-registered vehicles exempt from weight limitations (R.S. 39:3-84) when operating within 30 miles of their construction operation headquarters.
dump Trucks
Commissioner authorized transitional exemptions for dump trucks. Tandem axle sets max 34,000 lbs each; two consecutive tandem sets max 68,000 lbs combined. Tri-axle trailer max 56,400 lbs.
idle Reduction
Natural gas vehicles may exceed weight limits up to 82,000 lbs GVW by amount equal to difference between natural gas and comparable diesel fuel system weight.
permit Weights
NJ allows higher single axle limits (22,000 lbs) than federal standard. Tridem axle 50,000 lbs with permit.
